Shutting down our coal plants whether it is in the US or Canada(here in the province of Ontario, they have bragged in the media that they have shut down 11 of our 19 coal plants and we pay the highest energy prices in the entire country) is to get rid of our power infrastructure and is causing rolling blackouts across the United States, especially on hot days in the summer. The EPA has forced this shutdown under the excuse of saving the earth while leading the US into a third world state and sending millions of jobs overseas from Canada and the United States. All across the world people are demanding that the foods they eat are properly identified and honestly labeled. And the state of Oregon is no exception, where there are a trio of bills that have been recently introduced that would require that all genetically modified organisms(GMOs) be properly labeled as well as ban the sale of GM salmon, the first transgenic animal to be preliminarily be approved by the Food and Drug administration(FDA) for human consumption. One of the provisions is that if any foods that are mace with or contain GMOs beginning on January 1st 2014 will be deemed "misbranded, and its manufacturer held liable for breaking the state's food labeling requirements" and there are links to all 3 bills in the article if you want to check them out for yourself.

This is huge because we all have the right to know what is in our food and whether these have GMO in them or not and given recent studies linking GMOs to tumors, infertility, gastrointestinal problems even allergies and if this does happen, I think we could see more legislation like this across the US and maybe even in Canada..

Sedwgwick, Maine first town to declare food sovereignty, opposing state and federal laws

There seems to be a food revolt going on in the US whether it is to demand GMO labeling, the right to produce fresh organic milk and other goods or in the case of Sedgwick, Maine declaring all local food transactions of any kind free and legal.

According to a report at FoodRenegade.com, Sedgwick is one of the first cities in the US to free itself from federal and state food regulations. Reports also say the town passed an ordinance that gives citizens the right to "produce, sell and consume local foods of their choosing" regulations be damned and this also includes fresh raw organic milk, meats that slaughtered locally, all produce and anything else. What is more, other towns in Maine are expected to do the same thing according to FoodRenegade.com.

The purposed warrant according to David Grumpert of the completepatient.com:

"This isn't just a declaration of preference. The proposed warrant added, "It shall be unlawful for any law or regulation adopted by state or federal government to interfere with the rights recognized by this Ordinance" In other words, no state licensing requirements prohibiting certain farms from selling dairy products or producing their own chickens for sale to other citizens in the town. What about potential legal liability and state or federal inspections? It's all up to the seller and buyer to negotiate. "Patrons purchasing food for home consumption may enter into private agreements with those producers or processors of local foods to waive any liability for the consumption of that food. Producers or processors of local foods shall be exempt from licensure and inspection requirements for that food as long as those agreements are in effect" Imagine that-buyer and seller can agree to cut out the lawyers. That's almost un-American, isn't it"

According to a local resident Deborah Evans the ordinance also states that:

"1) Producers or processors of local foods in the Town of Sedgwick are exempt from licensure and inspection provided that the transaction is only between the producer or processor and a patron when the food is sold for home consumption

2) Producers or processors of local foods are exempt from licensure and inspection provided that the products are prepared for, consumed or sold at a community social event"

Which so true because how many times have we seen industrial food have to recall their products due to contamination of beef products for example or other food items that have caused illness but yet they have gone after innocent farmers like the folks at Rawesome Foods in Venice, California where they had no health violations but yet still got ransacked by authoritarian thugs...

The Oregon House Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources heard testimony on Thursday regarding 3 bills that concern genetically modified organisms including labeling initiatives and an outright BAN on the importation of genetically engineered fish.

H.B. 2175 would require foods that contain or are produced using genetically modified materials to be labeled. Supporters of the bill point that over 80% of food in US grocery stores contain genetically modified ingredients yet have no indication of that. Those in opposition such as Monsanto of course, claim that labeling would hurt them and local economies financially and would put a STIGMA on their products(good lord)

Never mind the long term studies that came out last year that showed genetically modified foods to have negative effects on health such as sterility, hair growth in the mouth and infant deaths in hamsters and a study done by Dr. Michael Antoniou, a molecular biologist at King's College London School of Medicine that rats fed a lifetime of this crap produced large tumors by a 200-300% increase and 50% of males and 70% of females died early

Also H.B. 2530 would also stop the importation of genetically altered fish into the state as well as the farming, cultivation or incubation of such fish and releasing them into the wild will also be illegal

The genetically modified salmon, known as "AquAdvantage" is the first GM animal to be approved for human consumption in the US. Produced by Aqua Bounty Technologies INC, the salmon has been engineered with genetic material from an eel-like species called ocean poutto to produce the natural hormones and would grow in less than 250 days and etc..
