According to Nation and State, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is at the forefront of funding new initiatives designed to root out racism in the sciences. The curriculum from the group A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction states that “asking students to show their work and find the right answer is an inherently racist practice.” The Gates Foundation is listed as the organization’s sole donor.
Not surprisingly, Oregon is following California’s lead by pushing far-left ideologies and implementing radical curricula, aimed at both teachers and children. On February 5, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) sent its math educators an invitation to participate in the California-based online Pathway to Math Equity Micro-Course. Launching February 25, the online course is a creation of the San Mateo (California) County Office of Education, the San Mateo County Community College District, and the California Partnership for Math and Science Education, among other groups. This “virtual micro-course for professionals looking for a deeper dive into equity work” will teach educators the “key tools for engagement to develop strategies to improve equitable outcomes for Black, Latinx, and multilingual students.”Under the pretense of advancing equity and inclusivity, the course is tailored exclusively to children of specific ethnicities. It is steeped in academic jargon intended to confuse parents and educators so they may not question the enormity of the changes to standard math curriculum.The course A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction furthermore embraces principles of critical race theory developed by academics who believe that “critical praxis in the classroom involves a continuous, self-reflective cycle between theory and action.” The toolkit features “5 Strides on the Path to Math Equity”: Dismantling Racism in Mathematics Instruction; Fostering Deep Understanding; Creating Conditions to Thrive; Connecting Critical Intersections; and Sustaining Equitable Practices. These “strides” ensure that educators will be able “to navigate the individual and collective journey from equity to antiracism.”
The framework also teaches that white supremacy culture in mathematics shows up in classrooms when there is:
- The focus on getting the “right” answer
- Independent practice is valued over teamwork or collaboration
- “Real-world math” is valued over math in the real world
- Students are tracked (into courses/pathways and within the classroom)
- Participation structures reinforce dominant ways of being.
The program joins scores of new rules and regulations promoting progressive curricula and teacher training to advance the Left’s goal of transforming core tenets of American K-12 education.
Earlier this month, The New American reported on the Illinois State Board of Education’s approval of Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards. On February 17, the state Joint Committee on Administrative Rules ratified the standards that are scheduled to replace current teacher-training guidelines in 2025. The criteria states that “culturally responsive” educators must “critically think about the institutions in which they find themselves, working to reform these institutions whenever and wherever necessary.” In other words, educators will become “responsive” not to the “three Rs” but to a host of highly politically charged issues, teaching leftist dogma such as the idea that widespread, systemic racial and gender discrimination exist and are the result of long-enduring systems of societal and cultural oppression.
Unfortunately, Republican opposition wasn’t great enough to sway the vote in the direction of maintaining curriculum not focused on race and gender. Amanda Elliott, executive director of legislative affairs for the Illinois state board, attempted to soften the impact of the overtly radical, progressive requirements by asserting that “the rules are for educator preparation programs, not aimed at school districts…. And it’s not about the personally-held beliefs or values of teachers that may be in the classroom, but making sure that they are welcoming to all students.” However, those wishing to teach in Illinois who disagree with the ideology of these standards will not be certified. Such drastic measures inevitably guarantee a compliant workforce of educators and staff programmed to teach leftist thinking.

PRC stands for a polymerase chain reaction, essentially what the test is doing is taking increasingly larger and larger samples of the biological material collected to see if the virus can be detected. Each cycle doubles the sample tested and the earlier on in the process virus is detected the more likely it is accurate. On the other hand, by the time the 30-35 cycle is reached the amount of untested samples is quite unlikely to find significant amounts of a virus. 45 cycles are testing the sample in such great detail to find any particle of the virus even if COVID is detected it may not be in a large enough amount to matter.
According to Dr. Robert Hagan at Medpage Today, “With these types of tests, it's critical to use an agreed-upon cycle threshold value such as 33 (CDC) or 35 (Dr. Fauci) rather than setting it at a potentially misleading 40 or 45. Many of the current tests in use are preset by the manufacturer to these higher numbers.”Currently, the COVID-19 infection numbers in Newfoundland & Labrador cannot be trusted on their face, so although they have only had 704 “confirmed cases” of COVID-19 they may actually be significantly lower than that due to the issues with false positives inherent in their method of testing.
Newfoundland has been experiencing a rise in cases with 296 new cases between February 2-15, so before the provincial government tries to act on what it sees as a fast rise in COVID-19 cases they may want to look at the validity of their tests. Many more infections occur than are detected and diagnosed as cases. In an analysis of international reports of IFR (the number of people with virus infection that will die of COVID-19) the median was 0.23 per cent. The median IFR was 0.05 per cent for people under 70, and was lower than for influenza in people under 50.
In Alberta, in people aged 0-19, no one has died with COVID-19; in people 20-49 and 50-59, the case fatality rate is less than 0.04 per cent and 0.16 per cent, with the IFR likely 10 times lower. Who is at high risk from the virus? People 70 and over, and 60-69-year-olds with multiple severe comorbidities (obesity, diabetes, kidney disease, dementia).

In Alberta, 86 per cent of deaths occurred in people 70 and older, and most other deaths were 60-69 with multiple comorbidities. Over 80 per cent of deaths occurred in long-term care homes for older people. These are the people accounting for most hospitalizations, intensive-care admissions, and deaths, and that require protection.
How do COVID-19 deaths compare to background death rates in Alberta? In normal years in Alberta there are more than 70 deaths/day and 25,990 deaths/yr. Over the past 12 months there have been 1,512 COVID-19-associated deaths in Alberta, accounting for less than 5.5 per cent of deaths in Alberta. Many of these were in people who in other years may have died from other causes.
Is there good evidence that lockdowns are required to protect high-risk people? No. Several studies have found that more restrictive lockdowns in different international locations were not associated with any clear effect on flattening the curve of cases or deaths. Sweden (with schools and businesses open, a no-mask policy except on rapid transit, social distancing recommendation of one metre) has lower deaths per capita than Quebec.
Has cost-benefit analysis demonstrated that lockdowns have more benefits than harms? No. Studies find that lockdowns cause far more harm to population well-being and deaths in the long term than they prevent. Harms include economic recession, unemployment, and loneliness that each reduce population well-being and lifespan. To deny Charter freedoms, reasonable limits that are demonstrably justified are necessary; this requires a cost-benefit analysis." Were most claims based on solid evidence?
No. First, the focus on case fatality rate was misleading, increasing fear of the virus. Third, claims about herd immunity were misleading. Recent studies suggest that less than 40-per-cent naturally induced immunity in a population achieves herd immunity. Natural herd immunity occurred for measles, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox in the era before vaccines. Fourth, vaccine claims were exaggerated. Available viral vaccines do not result in better and longer-term immunity than natural infection. Current vaccines may not protect people from upper respiratory SARS-CoV-2 infection causing subsequent transmission to others, even though they prevent COVID-19; thus, they are not known to result in herd immunity.
"Are there better strategies to respond to the pandemic?
Yes. A public emergency response aims to minimize impact of COVID-19 on our society. This requires a written emergency management plan released to all Albertans. A co-ordinating agency (Alberta Emergency Management Agency) is required to co-ordinate requests from the subject matter agency (public health) dealing with the direct effects of COVID-19, while also dealing with the indirect effects of the pandemic. In the 2014 Alberta Pandemic Response plans, the four goals are: controlling the spread of infection and reducing illness and death from the virus, mitigating societal disruption by ensuring continuity and recovery of critical services, minimizing adverse economic impact, and supporting an efficient and effective use of resources."

On Tuesday as Dr. Brent Roussin, Manitoba's chief public health officer, announced the new round of public health orders set to take effect on Friday, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms launched a challenge in Manitoba's Court of Queen’s Bench questioning the power given to the top doctor to implement those orders.
In its arguments, lawyers for the Justice Centre argued there is insufficient oversight in the extent of what Dr. Brent Roussin and Dr. Jazz Atwal, Manitoba's deputy chief public health officer, are allowed to do in a public health emergency.
The centre filed the constitutional challenge in December, representing seven churches, along with a minister, deacon and individual who had been fined under Manitoba's health orders.
Allison Pejovic, a lawyer for the Justice Centre, told the court she believes giving Dr. Roussin this kind of power, without requiring him to publicly back up the orders with scientific evidence is unconstitutional and violates principles of democracy.
"We are putting our trust in one person, and when you give that much power to one person, there has to be a real accountability," she said in court on Tuesday. "The accountability that the minister is going to take back to legislature has to be informed.”
She said the Justice Centre wants legislative changes that would require:
-more public consultation on the impacts of new orders
-the top doctor give scientific evidence for the orders to the public
-that he keeps the public up to date on any scientific changes
-and provide regular updates to the health minister on changes to scientific evidence
Michael Conner, the lawyer representing the Province of Manitoba, told the court the public health act was created over a decade under two previous governments. He said there is nothing in the legislation that prohibits the broad delegation of power.
"The legislature made a deliberate and conscious choice to delegate specific powers to a medical expert – the chief public health officer – to make public health emergency orders in response to a pandemic," he told the court.
Conner said there are several layers of accountability in place when the top doctor creates an order.
He said the order requires ministerial approval from Manitoba's Health Minister who can revoke the chief public health officer’s appointment at any time. Conner said the legislature still has the authority to amend the powers given to the top doctor.
He said in terms of scientific evidence, the minister can be held to account in the legislature, by the media and by the public.
Manitoba's Premier Brian Pallister had little to say about the constitutional challenge when asked during a news conference on Monday.
"I think COVID should be declared unconstitutional. I think we should all agree on that," he said.
